A career built on caring for sight

Dr. Aamir Pasha Siddiqui began his journey into ophthalmology as far back as 1983. Over more than 40 years he has cared for thousands of patients — but it is low vision that became his life's work.

Low vision care is for people whose sight can't be fully restored with glasses, contact lenses, medication or surgery. Dr. Siddiqui's mission is to help those patients use the vision they still have as effectively as possible — so they can keep reading, working and living with confidence.

In his own words

A journey into low vision

“My journey into ophthalmology started as far back as 1983. Until 1993, I had no formal introduction to how to care for the visually impaired. I was fortunate at that time to be working in an institution where I was exposed to low vision care, and I published my first paper on low vision in 1993.

From that introduction, I secured a place on a dedicated university course in Low Vision Rehabilitation at the Institute of Education under Stockholm University. There I was exposed to the full spectrum of care — from primary through to tertiary level — learning alongside world leaders, academics and scientists in the field.

I was hooked, and I have been practising low vision care ever since. For the last two decades I have run a low vision clinic, and I was asked to lead low vision services during my hospital posting. Over that time, low vision care has evolved dramatically — from simple advice into a rich toolkit of optical, non-optical and electronic strategies and devices.

There is a great deal of help available today for people with visual impairment — much of it accessible even without formal registration. We work closely with the local Eye Clinic Liaison Officer, who can be enormously helpful in connecting patients with social services and wider support.”
